What changes for a dog area
Dogs dig, run the same path and use the same corner. A dog area needs turf that drains quickly and a base that does not hold liquid.
Pet drainage upgrades, such as flow-through backing and antimicrobial infill, are typically priced as an add-on. See the cost guide.
Drainage comes first
Florida's standard requires permeable turf and backing over a base graded to drain. For a dog area, ask the installer how the base carries liquid away and where it goes. The standard also says the turf cannot send runoff onto a neighboring lot.
What goes into the infill
Under the state standard, infill is limited to clean silica sand, rock, shell or another natural material. Coated silica sand is allowed if the coating is non-toxic. Turf, backing and infill cannot contain heavy metals or intentionally added PFAS.
Ask for the infill product and what it is made of. Pet-specific infills are sold as antimicrobial, so ask what that means for the product the installer proposes.
Heat on paws
Turf gets hot: California measurements cited by a University of Florida turf scientist put it near 174°F. Shade, a lighter color mix and cooling infill are options, and the surface should be tested by hand before a dog uses it in the afternoon.
Questions to ask
- How does the base drain, and where does the liquid go?
- What is the backing, and does it let liquid flow through?
- What infill is used, and is it a natural material?
- How big should the area be for my dogs?
- What does cleaning involve, and what products are safe on this turf?
Dog turf questions
Is turf for dogs a different product?
Often a different backing and infill on similar turf. Ask the installer what makes the pet option different, and what it adds to the price.
Can I have turf only for a small dog run?
Yes. A small area is common. Small jobs often cost more per square foot, because crew time and trips are the same as for a bigger one.
